Animal Breeding activities are focussed on enhancing bovine productivity, thereby ensuring profitability and sustainability in the dairy and livestock sector. The group actively implements and monitors scientific breeding programs, including performance recording, genetic evaluation, and genomic selection for animals raised in farmers' herds. To accelerate the multiplication of superior germplasm, it promotes advanced reproductive technologies such as Ovum Pickup, In Vitro Embryo Production, and Embryo Transfer (OPU-IVEP-ET), making them accessible and affordable for farmers.

In addition to its breeding initiatives, the group plays a pivotal role in:

  • Importing high-quality germplasm to strengthen national breeding programs.
  • Capacity building of professionals in genetic evaluation and reproductive technologies.
  • Implementing and monitoring government-sanctioned programmes to improve breeding efficiency.
  • Providing technical consultancy to various stakeholders on breeding strategies.

On the above focus areas, NDDB has been implementing multiple projects for genetic improvement during Operation Flood, National Dairy Plan I (NDP I) etc. Since 2019, various central sector scheme projects sanctioned under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), Govt. of India in association with State Dept. of Animal Husbandry/ Livestock Development Boards, Cooperative Milk Federations, Milk Unions, NGOs, and NDDB subsidiaries are being implemented.

Objectives
  • Enhance bovine productivity through scientific breeding interventions, ensuring sustainable and profitable dairying.
  • Implement genetic improvement programs for major dairy breeds through performance recording for production of high genetic merit bulls.
  • Implement Genomic selection to accelerate genetic progress in dairy bovines.
  • Advance research to standardize and make advanced reproductive biotechnologies accessible and affordable for farmers.
  • Develop and conduct training programs for skill development in OPU-IVEP-ET and Genomics.
