Ration Balancing Programme (RBP) aims to educate dairy farmers on feeding balanced rations to their dairy animals

  • Rations fed to the animals are often imbalanced in protein, energy, minerals and vitamins, leading to poor animal productivity and reduced income from dairy farming.
  • NDDB developed user-friendly ration balancing software to educate dairy farmers on feeding balanced rations to their animals using locally available feed ingredients.
  • Under the National Dairy Plan (Phase-I), Ration Balancing Program (RBP) covered about 28.65 lakh milch animals belonging to 21.57 lakh farmers across 18 states in the country.
  • RBP improved daily milk yield by an average of 0.27 kg, reduced feeding cost by 11.8 percent, enhanced net income of farmers by Rs. 27 per day per animal. It also reduced enteric methane emission by 13.7 percent.
  • To increase the reach of RBP, existing Ration Balancing software has been revamped and incorporated into ‘Bharat Pashudhan’. User friendly mobile application (1962 App) has been developed to be used directly by the dairy farmers.

The Challenge

Dairy animals often receive imbalanced rations of protein, energy, minerals, and vitamins. This leads to poor animal productivity and a significant reduction in income for dairy farmers.

NDDB's Solution

NDDB developed user-friendly ration balancing software to educate dairy farmers on how to feed balanced rations to their animals, utilizing locally available feed ingredients effectively. This empowers farmers with the knowledge to improve their practices.

Impact & Reach (National Dairy Plan - Phase I)

Under the National Dairy Plan (Phase-I), the Ration Balancing Program (RBP) successfully covered approximately 28.65 lakh milch animals belonging to 21.57 lakh farmers across 18 states in India. The program demonstrated tangible improvements:

  • Milk Yield Increase

Average of 0.27 kg per animal per day.

  • Feeding Cost Reduction

    Reduced by 11.8 percent.

  • Enhanced Net Income

Increased by Rs. 27 per day per animal.

  • Reduced Methane Emission

Enteric methane emission decreased by 13.7 percent.

Expanding the Reach

To further expand the reach of RBP, the existing software has been revamped and incorporated into 'Bharat Pashudhan'. Additionally, a user-friendly mobile application (1962 App) has been developed for direct use by dairy farmers, making the program even more accessible.
