Milk, the complete food with an array of macro and micro nutrients is being consumed by all population groups. India has a very high burden of Vitamin A and D deficiencies, amongst both young children and adults. NDDB has initiated a project ‘Improved Nutrition through Milk Micronutrient Fortification’ under the South Asia Food and Nutrition Initiative (SAFANSI) of World Bank to address the micronutrient deficiency. The Milk Fortification Project aims at fortifying milk with Vitamin A and D, a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to deliver micro-nutrients to large populations. The Dairy Board continues to assist the Dairy Cooperatives on Vitamin fortification.
Dairy Board assists the Dairy Cooperatives creating an awareness on Labelling Requirements on packages, the integral part of food-safety, ensuring consumers have access to accurate information about the product’s composition, potential allergens, and storage guidelines.
On the other hand, the Dairy Board also continues to extend support to regulatory bodies like FSSAI on the subject of Nutritional labelling. In a recent development, FSSAI is planning to introduce front-of-pack nutrition labelling. In this connection, the Dairy Board welcomes the draft-notification by FSSAI on Indian-Nutrition-Rating ( INR ) system proposing to assign 0.5 to 5 stars with the objective of helping consumers to be selective for healthy food. The Dairy Board has further suggested a separate and appropriate mechanism to ensure ascribing milk and milk products with their due and high star rating, promoting consumption of milk and milk products, in wake of the fact that milk contains an array of nutrients and is considered a complete food consumed across the age.
